Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa of Bahrain wins Silver medal in Women’s Marathon at Rio Olympic Games

Rio, 15 August 2016 – Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa, representing Bahrain gave it all in the Women’s marathon as she broke from the leading group after 39k and took lead but she was overtaken by Kenya’s Jemina Sumgong in the final stretch who went on winning Kenya’s first women marathon gold medal in 2:24:04 while Kirwa settled on the incredible silver medal with 2:24:13. Mare Dibaba, current World champion from Ethiopia took third spot in 2:24:30.  Rose Chelimo also from Bahrain finished on the 8th place in 2:27:36.  Twin sisters Hye-Song KIM and Hye-Gyong KIM of DPR of Korea finished on the 10th and 11th place with an identical time of 2:28:36. 

Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan who has stadium named after her in Kazakhstan, could not defend her women triple jump title as she could managed best of 14.74m jump which still kept her on the podium with Bronze medal ahead of Caterine Ibarguen of Colombia and Yulimar ROJAS of Venezuela . Caterine won the Gold medal with 15.17m jump.
